Later on, he went on to play for India and his performances in Test cricket against international teams is now history, with over 250 wickets. Bishan would meet me and my dad whenever he visited Chennai. In one Test match against the West Indies at Chepauk in the seventies, during lunch time, he had a chat with my dad, who I think gave him a few tips, which I believe helped him to get three or more wickets in the match. I had not seen my father bowl, but his contemporaries like M.J. Gopalan, C.R. Rangachari and the journalist S.K. Gurunathan used to talk about his bowling and batting, and his contribution to Tamil Nadu cricket. In the inaugural Ranji match at Chepauk, Madras versus Mysore in November 1933, my dad got the first 5 wickets in an innings and the first 10 wickets in a Ranji match. The match was over in a day with Madras winning by an innings. The folklore goes that the Bangalore cricket lovers went to the railway station to buy newspapers to see the result of the match. Newspaper distribution in those days was not available but it could be purchased from specific points, the railway station being one of them. The cricket lovers, to their surprise and consternation, saw the Mysore team disembark from the Madras Mail, and it gave the result of the match to them in person. Bishan had and still has a great respect for my dad, and when my dad passed away in 1999, he flew down to Chennai to attend his antim ardas.
